Simple test: If you were someone's pet, would you want to be able to roam free, with all of the possibilities, good and bad, or would you rather be confined to a few rooms, day after day after day?

I had cats all my life, until I met MY WIFE (she's allergic to dander) and all of them went out. A couple of toms did not come back finally, but that's the way it goes. I loved them, but they loved ME for giving them their freedom. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

If you'd like to read about them...

http://jimsuldog.blogspot.com/2006/09/coalie-tigger_28.htmlSuldoghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07778845367184916684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4619630163838803293.post-54124891199420341002009-04-27T21:12:00.000-04:002009-04-27T21:12:00.000-04:00Thank you everyone, it is definately a difficult d...Thank you everyone, it is definately a difficult decision to make. I have been leaning towards letting Charlie do what he loves most... be outside. I have kept him in for two days now, under the pretense of monitoring his health. He is not a happy camper, and constantly reminds us vocally that he wants to be on the "other side" of the door. He seems no worse for wear after his ordeal, so I will probably let him out tomorrow morning. As some of you so eloquently put it; I have to just love him while I can.
Thank you so much for your comments.
I'd like to warmly welcome Barco Sin Vela II. We had had Felina for about 6 years when she disappeared. We got Rugen next and expected him to stay around - had him fixed and let him in often. When we lost Rugen, Jesse and I were very upset. I am about to get a new kitten and I have the same mis-givings. How can I let them roam, but still keep them close?

I'm glad you found Charlie.Bag Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01885412195900280096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4619630163838803293.post-77105020142053743722009-04-27T08:17:00.000-04:002009-04-27T08:17:00.000-04:00My first cat, Gus, was a tuxedo cat. I made the decision that I had to let him be who he was. He was always in at night and very attached to me - friends said it sounded like he "said" "Mama" when he ran to me and leapt in my arms. He disappeared when he was 9, when I let him out too early one fall morning - he was a voracious hunter although checked in nearly hourly. Karl and I combed the woods where we lived at the time, flyers, barns, houses, outbuildings around. Nearly 4 years later, I am still heartbroken about his loss but love the time we had together and still believe his happiness depended as much on being out and about as being part of my little family.

Everyone has to decide for themselves the best thing to do - some days I just want to hold tight to Karl, Bob or things I love but like Sharon, I know that the best I can do is love them each day and hope for another.Lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13925164639039478342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4619630163838803293.post-31637813159451819322009-04-27T06:45:00.000-04:002009-04-27T06:45:00.000-04:00So glad you got Charlie back, but if you really lo...So glad you got Charlie back, but if you really love him, you're going to have to let him out. We have the same situation with Bruce, our shop cat. If I made him stay in, he'd be miserable and it wouldn't be a happy life for him, or us because I'm sure he'd let us know about his unhappiness. Some cats were just made to live outside and I think Charlie is one of them. Just love him for as long as you have him and that's as much as you can ask for.Sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18393517097643673337noreply@blogger.com
