A Day at Sea

My fishing buddy invited me to try my luck at catching some bluefish yesterday morning... so on the early morning tide we jumped into his Carolina skiff, and headed out in search of our next meal.

Our launch was from West Bay Harbor in Osterville.

The water was calm, just a slight wind, and to make it even better... the sun was shining!

There had been a threat of thunderstorms, so we had to keep an eye on the sky. We found the bluefish, lazily swimming on the top of the water.... but couldn't get them to bite on any lure. Popper, Kastmaster, not one bite!

As the T-storms neared, the wind came up, blowing cold out of the north, and the waters turned choppy. We ducked in behind Sampson's Island to get out of the wind. Just as we did, the sun came out again, so we took a slow troll up the channel.
After deciding that there just wasn't going to be fish on the menu, we headed back into the harbor, north wind blowing straight at us. The boat handled great, and in no time we were back on shore, packing it up.

Undaunted, we opted for clamming a bit later in the day, at the tip of Sandy Neck Beach.

The sun did peak in and out of the clouds while we were there, but I didn't take any pictures until after we had dug the clams. By then... well, you see how quickly the weather changes here!

Yesterday, I took these pics of Barnstable Harbor.

It was low tide, and the water was making small ripples near the shoreline.

The summer cottages are beginning to open up and I could hear a roofing crew banging their hammers nearby.

The beach roses are in full bloom this week... very lovely!

A Northwest Wind Blows

These photos were taken today on the northside of the Cape. Things are still looking rather brown and dull on the nearby marsh and except for the pine trees that dot the road up through the sand dunes to the beach, there is very little green vegetation.

The wind is out of the northwest and as you can see the surf is up on Sandy Neck Beach.

I caught a glimpse of a group of divers making their way to the beach, carrying wetsuits, masks, air tanks. Not for me, I thought. Too COLD! Even in the middle of the summer, the water temperature at Sandy Neck only gets up to 50-60 degrees.

Early In the Morning

Sometimes a walk on the beach is the best thing after a sixteen hour shift. It feels great to fill your lungs with the fresh sea air and I was lucky today... no one else on the beach. The wind was whipping my hair all about, but it didn't matter, when I finally got back into my vehicle I felt relaxed and ready to head for home.

Stormy Weather - The different sides of Cape Cod

An old Cape Cod saying is: "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute". It's very true, as I can attest to today... At 8:30 am the pictures below were taken at Long Beach and Sandy Neck Beach. The sun was shining, the wind whipping in from off-shore after last night's storm.... A balmy 80 degrees already!

At 10:00 am I came out from shopping at the Christmas Tree Shop,
and saw the storm clouds looming in the distance....
big thunderheads, black and menacing... so I figured I'd better hurry home to close the windows in the house! Fifteen minutes later, no clouds, no rain, sunshine again!? However, as I sit here typing at 1:50 pm, the thunder and lightning have passed through and the rain which poured for a moment or two, has become just a "pit pat" on the window glass pane.
My backyard is a bit damp....

What's even stranger about the weather on Cape Cod is you can travel from one side to the other and experience rain on the northside, while people are soaking up the sun on the southside!
